Melasma Treatments

What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a pigmentation disorder that occurs when the skin produces excess melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin colour, and when it becomes overactive, it creates dark patches on the skin.

This condition most commonly affects the face, but it may also appear on the neck or forearms.

Melasma is often triggered by:

  • Sun exposure
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Birth control pills
  • Genetic factors

Signs You May Need Melasma Treatments

Many people mistake melasma for sun spots or age spots. However, melasma has unique characteristics that require specialized treatment.

You may benefit from professional melasma treatments if you notice:

A dermatologist can diagnose melasma and recommend the best treatment for melasma based on the depth and severity of pigmentation.

Medical Treatment

For many patients, the first step in managing pigmentation is a dermatologist-supervised medical treatment for melasma. These treatments reduce melanin production and gradually lighten existing dark patches.

Prescription Creams

Dermatologists often prescribe topical medications as part of a medical treatment for melasma plan. These creams work to control pigment production and improve overall skin tone.

Key Ingredients

Common ingredients include hydroquinone, retinoids, azelaic acid, and kojic acid. They help break down pigmentation while encouraging healthy skin cell turnover.

Combination Therapy

Dermatologists may recommend creams containing multiple active ingredients for stronger results. This approach targets pigmentation from several pathways at the same time.

Professional Monitoring

Regular dermatologist supervision ensures that medical treatment for melasma remains safe and effective. Progress is monitored closely to minimize irritation and optimize results.

Types of Lasers Used

The best laser treatment for melasma may include advanced technologies such as:

  • Laser Technology: Laser treatments use focused energy to target pigment deep within the skin. This energy breaks down excess melanin into tiny particles that the body can gradually eliminate.
  • Pigment Reduction: As the body naturally clears the fragmented pigment, dark patches slowly begin to fade. Over time, the skin tone becomes brighter, clearer, and more even.
  • Fractional Lasers: This creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate renewal and collagen production. This process helps improve pigmentation while supporting healthier skin regeneration.
  • Pico Lasers: Pico lasers deliver ultra-fast pulses of energy to break down pigment more efficiently. They are known for treating stubborn pigmentation with minimal heat damage to surrounding tissue.
  • Q-Switched Lasers: Q-switched lasers target melanin with high-intensity light pulses that shatter pigment particles. The body then naturally removes these particles through the lymphatic system.
  • Non-Ablative Lasers: Non-ablative resurfacing lasers treat pigmentation without removing the outer layer of skin. They stimulate skin repair while improving tone and reducing visible discoloration.
