Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved and used for the cosmetic treatment of fine facial lines, wrinkles, and folds. Injectable dermal fillers can also be used to plump or add volume to thin lips. Dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in every living cell. Fillers contain synthetic gel forms of hyaluronic acid derived from non-animal sources and are highly compatible with the body. When the gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity with normal aging.
Hyaluronic acid also brings water to the surface of the skin to keep it looking fresh and supple. The gel is injected into the skin through a fine-gauge needle at the site of unwanted lines and wrinkles. While dermal fillers are generally safe, dermal filler treatments should be performed by a professional to avoid complications and serious side effects at the injection site.

HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS
Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary dermal fillers that restore skin moisture and diminish signs of aging. It’s main ingredient, hyaluronic acid (HA) is a primary component of the skin and is responsible for that plump and hydrated look. Benefits of HA fillers include anti-aging, moisturizing, anti-wrinkle, restore skin elasticity, and treat eczema and redness. HA fillers are safe and allergic reactions are rare with this type of filler because hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the skin.
Hyaluronic acid fillers can last up to 18-24 months or longer. Like any cosmetic procedure, there is no guarantee of complete satisfaction, or that wrinkles and folds will disappear completely. Additional treatments may be required to achieve desired results, and visible outcomes will vary per patient. To maintain the desired effect, we recommend follow up treatments before the effects of the last treatment wear off.

How to Prepare for the Treatment:
- Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. Drink at least 60 oz of water daily starting at least two days before the treatment.
- Discontinue blood thinning agents such as vitamin E, vitamin A, ginkgo, garlic, flax, cold liver oil, & fish oil.
- Avoid aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications 7 days prior to procedure. Please consult a physician if you are taking these medications for a medical condition before discontinuing.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure prior and after treatment.
- Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (retin-A), Retinols, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic acid, or other anti-aging or “bleaching” products 5 days in advance.

Alicia McCarthy, ND
Dr. Alicia McCarthy earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree from California State University of Fullerton in 2008 and her Naturopathic Medical degree in 2017 from National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR. The twelve years Dr. McCarthy spent working in emergency medicine as an EMT set the foundation for the provider she is today. She now specializes in aesthetic medicine, dedicating her continuing education and practice to staying current on the latest techniques and products. Dr. McCarthy believes in aging gracefully. She takes the time to sit down with each patient and find out what this means for them.
Prior to joining Knott Street Dermatology, Dr. McCarthy had her own practice in Lake Oswego focused on aesthetic medicine, hormone balancing, thyroid conditions, and IV medicine.
Originally from Southern California, Dr. McCarthy has lived in Portland for the last eleven years. When she is not working Dr. McCarthy stays busy with her two young kids, husky pup, and husband. They enjoy spending time outside, camping, swimming, and playing at the park.
Olivia Gill LE,CAE
Olivia graduated from Spectrum Advanced Aesthetics in 2015 and has been working full time as a Certified Advanced Esthetician and Laser Safety Officer for the last 6 years. Olivia’s favorite part about her job is helping her patients feel more confident in their own skin. She takes pride in tailoring each skin care regimen and treatment plan to fit everyone’s lifestyle and budget. When she’s not pampering patients, she enjoys camping, traveling, and quality time spent with her family, husband, and Corgi puppy- Ginger!
