HOW DOES COOLSCULPTING WORK?
Science is at the core of CoolSculpting. Fat cells “die” by cooling at higher temperatures compared to other nearby tissues. As a result, CoolSculpting can target unwanted fat at just the right temperature to “freeze it away” without harming surrounding tissue. Over time, your body will naturally flush out these dead cells.
Your CoolSculpting provider will mark the target areas and apply a clear gel pad that protects your skin. Then, the non-invasive applicator with suction is applied, which draws the bulge of fat up into the applicator cup. In just a couple of minutes, the area gets numb and cool. CoolSculpting isn’t uncomfortable and doesn’t feel like putting ice on the skin. In fact, a lot of patients take their CoolSculpting session as a time to nap, check their email, read, or catch up on their latest Netflix show. We have free streaming TV available for our patients. Every area takes between 35 and 115 minutes to treat.

Instead of treating love handles in 2 hours, both sides of the love handles can be treated in just 1 hour. The ability to use 2 machines simultaneously decreases treatment time and allows for results to be obtained in fewer sessions.

THE SCIENCE

TREATMENT
During your treatment, a gel pad and applicator will be applied to the targeted area. The CoolSculpting applicator delivers controlled cooling to the targeted fat. During your procedure, feel free to read, check email, or even take a nap.
We will work with you on a CoolSculpting treatment plan that’s tailored to your body and your goals.
During your visit, a cooling device is placed on the treatment area. You can return to normal activities immediately.
You may start to see results in a few weeks, with best results seen after 1 to 3 months.
RECOVERY
Since CoolSculpting® is completely non-invasive, there are absolutely no restrictions in returning to your normal routine. Redness, bruising, tingling, or numbness can occur but typically resolves shortly following the treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CoolSculpting—You can resume your normal activities immediately following the procedure. However, you may experience some tenderness in the treated area that will resolve on its own.
CoolSculpting—The length of your appointment will vary based on the number of areas you are having treated. It usually takes about 35-115 minutes per treatment area.
CoolSculpting—It can take up to 3 months to see the full results of the treatment, as your body needs to eliminate the fat cells from your body naturally.
There are many body-contouring methods available, with two popular ones being the surgical routes of liposuction and plastic surgery. CoolSculpting doesn’t require anesthesia, injections, or any incisions.
CoolSculpting—The number of treatments will vary based on your goals. You can typically see up to 25% fat reduction* with each treatment, so each area of concern should ideally receive at least two treatment sessions.
CoolSculpting offers a long-lasting solution to stubborn fat by killing off fat cells. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they do not come back so your CoolSculpting results should last indefinitely. Alicia McCarthy, ND
Dr. Alicia McCarthy earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree from California State University of Fullerton in 2008 and her Naturopathic Medical degree in 2017 from National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR. The twelve years Dr. McCarthy spent working in emergency medicine as an EMT set the foundation for the provider she is today. She now specializes in aesthetic medicine, dedicating her continuing education and practice to staying current on the latest techniques and products. Dr. McCarthy believes in aging gracefully. She takes the time to sit down with each patient and find out what this means for them.
Prior to joining Knott Street Dermatology, Dr. McCarthy had her own practice in Lake Oswego focused on aesthetic medicine, hormone balancing, thyroid conditions, and IV medicine.
Originally from Southern California, Dr. McCarthy has lived in Portland for the last eleven years. When she is not working Dr. McCarthy stays busy with her two young kids, husky pup, and husband. They enjoy spending time outside, camping, swimming, and playing at the park.

Rachael graduated from the Aesthetics Institute in 2020 and recently acquired a Bachelor of Arts from Portland State University. Coming from a dermatology background, Rachael has a passion for skin health and sun protection. Her favorite part about being an Advanced Aesthetician is helping patients reach their skin goals and watching their confidence build because of it. She understands that everyone’s skin requires its own unique approach whether it’s a treatment plan or a skincare regimen.
When she is out of the office, Rachael enjoys traveling, trying new food, making art, and doing pretty much anything outdoors – especially if it includes her Doberman-mix pup, Rubio!
